WHO I AM
AGAZI DESTA is a first generation Ethiopian-American writer and director from Boston, currently based in Los Angeles. Coming from a resilient and hardworking background, Agazi is the son of refugees from the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
An award winning filmmaker, Agazi’s creative works have been accredited in notable film festivals across the world including TRIBECA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, OXFORD INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, SEDONA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, & MARTHA’S VINEYARD AFRICAN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL.
Agazi was humbly awarded the grand prize for BEST DIRECTING in his collaborative feature film VOODOO MACBETH at the CATALINA FILM FESTIVAL. Agazi was also awarded the GRAND JURY PRIZE for BEST SHORT FILM in the narrative category for his drama, WAVES, at the MINNESOTA ST. PAUL FILM FESTIVAL.
A dual degree graduate from the University of Southern California, Agazi has attributed his passion in filmmaking from a literary discipline, gaining inspiration in the novelty genres of both historical and contemporary drama, as well as crime/thriller. An inspired creator of original works, Agazi is also interested in adapting historical novels into screenplays for film & television.
Agazi had graduated with a B.A. in Literature in 2015 from the USC Dana & David Dornsife College Of Letters, Arts, & Sciences, and had completed his M.F.A. studies at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 2020. During Agazi’s graduate endeavors, he was awarded the George Lucas Family Foundation scholarship for Diversity & Inclusion.
Along with his pursuits in writing/directing for film & television, Agazi is currently in the midst of spearheading a production company, DestaNation Pictures, LLC, which serves to champion underrepresented stories from first generation American backgrounds.
